Back to Previous Page Today was the day that we buried Griffin. We only wanted a simple ceremony that we would lead ourselves. We only wanted immediate family, so Ruth, Don, Olive, Bob and Brian were present, along with Maureen and I.
We decided to lay Griffin along with his sister Laura in the same grave.

At 10:30am, I greeted everybody, and read the small passages that I had found that seemed appropriate for the moment. Maureen and I liked the song "I Will Remember You" by Sara McLachlan, but when I read the words it didn't express what we were feeling. Then I read over the lyrics to "I Will Not Forget You" and it said what we were feeling exactly, so I began with that.

I had put the readings in a "program" and it read as follows:

Griffin Riley Nash

I Will Not Forget You
I remember the nights I watched as you lay sleeping
Your body gripped by some far away dream
Well I was so scared and so in love then
And so lost in all of you that I had seen
But no one ever talked in the darkness
No voice ever added fuel to the fire
No light ever shone in the doorway
Deep in the hollow of earthly desires
But if in some dream there was brightness
If in some memory some sort of sign
And flesh be revived in the shadows
Blessed our bodies would lay so entwined
And I will not forget you
Nor will I ever let you go
I will not forget you
I remember when you left in the morning at daybreak
So silent you stole from my bed
To go back to the one who possesses your soul ...
Sarah McLachlan, from the album Solace

“Pooh, promise you won’t forget about me, ever.
Not even when I’m a hundred.”

Pooh thought for a little.
“How old shall I be then?”
“Ninety-nine.”
Pooh nodded.
“I promise,” he said.

A. A. Milne, from The House at Pooh Corner
O Great Spirit, whose breath gives life to the world, and whose voice is heard in the soft breeze:
We need your strength and wisdom.
Cause us to walk in beauty.
Give us eyes ever to behold the red and purple sunset.
Make us wise so that we may understand what you have taught us.
Help us learn the lessons you have hidden in every leaf and rock.
Make us always ready to come to you with clean hands and steady eyes, so when life fades, like the fading sunset, our spirits may come to you without shame.
Native American Prayer
Some people come into our lives and quickly go.
Some people move our souls to dance.
They awaken us to understanding with the passing whisper of their wisdom.
Some people make the sky more beautiful to gaze upon
They stay in our lives for awhile, leave footprints on our hearts,
and we are never, ever the same.

Griffin, you will be missed.
We will not forget you.
We will tell your brother Sullivan all about you.
