Gary Munson Collection
This page is a tribute to the Jules Verne part of the amazing collection of collector, Gary Edward Munson (1957 - 2021)
From Hawaiian Stamp Auction catalogue:
Gary Edward Munson was born May 21, 1957 in Fullerton, California and a lifelong California native. He graduated from UCLA and went on to be Vice President of several banks. He was owner and controller of an
aluminum company in Paramount CA until his passing in 2021. He was a collector of many unique items, in particular Hawaiian stamps as well as classic literature and original artwork specializing in horror and fantasy, boasting a broad range of items from the sixteenth to twentieth centuries.
Highlights included an 1818 triple-decker first edition of the Gothic classic, Frankenstein by Mary Shelley, as well as a first edition and the first pirated edition of John William Polidori’s The Vampyre, both copies published in 1819.
The following pages feature the impressive second part of the Gary Munson collection of Hawaii Stamps and Postal History highlighted by five Hawaiian Missionary Issue stamps, important Numerals on and off cover, U.S.-Hawaii combination frankings, rare 1893 Overprint errors, and featuring specimens, plate and die proofs, cancels and much more.
We would like to thank Gary's family for entrusting this fine collection to us and hope that this catalogue will serve as a lasting tribute to Gary's love of philately.

The Gary Munson collection of horror and fantasy is filled with some of the rarest books a collector could own. On July 27, Heritage is auctioning off many pieces from this illustrious collection, which includes first editions, out-of-pprint books, and antique books as well. If you’re looking to start a book collection, or add to it, do not sleep on this auction. |
The Gary Munson Collection was MUCH more than Jules Verne, but of course I will concentrate on Jules Verne and these are the auctions I have found with Jules Verne items!

2021 October 14 The Gary Munson Collection of Horror and Fantasy Rare Books Auction #31172
From: https://www.antiquestradegazette.com/print-edition/2021/december/2521/auction-reports/books-and-works-on-paper-horror-hammer-highlights/
The remarkable Gary Munson collection of Horror & Fantasy books, offered on October 14 in Dallas, was headed by a first edition of Frankenstein...
It was one that had in more recent times seen the three volumes of 1818 acquire smart morocco gilt bindings, and though it doubled expectations to sell at $130,000 (£94,890), it was only very recently that a copy in the rarely seen original bindings was bid to $950,000 at Christie’s New York as part of the Theodore B Baum library as reported in ATG No 2512.
But this more recent Heritage (25% buyer’s premium) sale contained a great many other rarities and produced a number of quite exceptional results every one of the lots noted below, though arranged here more or less in order of publication, set an auction record.

The main reason for this page is this amazing sale that took place in July 2023. For some unknown reason, the family consigning the books from the Gary Munson collection, said/ordered these 273 Jules Verne books to be sold as ONE Lot!!!
This Lot sale is a Jules Verne Collectors dream! The Lot includes many 1st UK and 1st American editions, and some of them are quite hard to find. There are even duplicates!
Given what I have shown being sold in previous auctions above, the Jules Verne content of the Gary Munson Collection, was quite impressive.
