Ed: As I study the various sets, I find that each set can come in different bindings.
I think it was also possible to order custom bindings which means that there are many "Unique" bindings out there.
|
Salesman Samples
The sets were possibly sold door to door, as there exist Salesman Samples that show examples of various parts of the volumes, including the Illustrations, as well as the Introduction, as well as example pages taken randomly from various volumes, AND in 1 case, examples of the Spines.
Example 1 of Salesman Sample volume:
Red Cloth Cover, with no Title, and none on the spine
|
Image of Jules Verne
|
Tissue after the Verne image
|
Volume Title Page
|
Intro from Volume 1 of the Set
|
Illustrations with Descriptions
|
Text page examples, seemingly random!
|
On inside of rear cover
are pasted 2 example spines |

|
Example 2 of Salesman Sample volume:
Black Leather Cover, with no Title, and no imprint on the spine
|
Leather and Silk Moire as endpapers
|
All other details are identical to example 1, except this volume does not have examples of the spine!

Edition Magnifique
Limited Set by Vincent Parke and Co.:
|
|
Edition Name
|
Edition Magnifique
|
Date: |
copyright 1911 |
Number of sets in this edition |
26 sets Lettered from A - Z |
Binding |
Sets noted in:
- Blue (with blue spines)
- Full Green Morocco Leather
Title stamped in gilt on spine and "Edition Magnifique" at base of spine
Leather on the inside of the covers tooled with Iris pattern,
and satin moire endpapers.
Ed: I debate whether the spines are faded to the tan colour from sun exposure, or died that way. It would seem to make sense that they have faded, but it is a nice consistent colour between all the volumes!
|
Edition Plate Details |
ALL Volumes have a plate indicating the name of the edition, the number of copies in the edition and which letter the set is, as well as the the signature of the registrar R. G. Lancaster (i.e. the main certificate from Volume 1 is repeated in each volume)
The certificate preceeds the title page and frontice illustration and reads:
This is to certify that the
Edition Magnifique
of the
Works of Jules Verne
is limited to twenty-six lettered
copies of fifteen volumes each;
and that this set is registered as

??Unique?? Edition
Set by Vincent Parke and Company: The details of this edition are unclear. I have talked to the owner of this set, and there is no certificate in the first volume! The set is bound exquisitly in leather and rivals the "Edition Magnifique"!
(see images below)
Sadly, this set is missing 1 volume, and thus contains only 14 volumes!
