  • April 20 – Ads for the May “Sartain’s” magazine (A Voyage in a Balloon) appear in Newspapers
  • April 22 – A Voyage in a Balloon, Chapter I, in “The Brandon Post”, Jules Verne given credit (1st Mention EVER of Jules Verne that I can find in the English Press!)
  • April 29 – A Voyage in a Blaloon [sic], Chapter II, in “The Brandon Post”, Jules Verne given credit
  • May – A Voyage in a Balloon appears in the May “Sartain’s” magazine, Jules Verne given credit (Jules Verne Encyclopedia)
  • ?? July 10 – NOT VERIFIED - A Voyage in a Balloon appears in Home Circle, according to an announcement in The Leicestershire Mercury and General Advertiser For The Midland Counties, July 10, 1852
  • July 31 – A Voyage in a Balloon, in “The Working Man’s” magazine, Jules Verne given credit (Jules Verne Encyclopedia)
  • Aug 26 – a notice for publication of A Voyage in a Balloon for the Home Companion entry (next) appears, with the ending of the story , here called A Balloon Adventure, is published in The North Devon Journal-Herald.
  • September 4 – A Voyage in a Balloon, in “The Home Companion” magazine, No mention of Verne
  • September 24 – A Balloon Adventure in “The North Wales Chronicle”, abridged version of A Voyage in a Balloon, No mention of Verne

  • March 10 – Ad for “Graham’s” magazine, mentioning Pearl of Lima, in “New York Tribune”, credits translation by Anne T Wilbur
  • March 14 & 17 – Ads for “Graham’s” magazine, mentioning Pearl of Lima, in “New York Daily Herald”. The 14th ad credits Anne T Wilbur for translation
  • March 18 – Ad for “Graham’s” magazine, mentioning Pearl of Lima, in “Belmont Chronicle”, Saint Clairsville, Ohio – No credit given
  • April (published March 19th re “Herald” ad) – The Pearl of Lima, in “Graham’s” magazine, Jules Verne given credit (Jules Verne Encyclopedia)

  • October – A Voyage in a Balloon, in “The Sixpenny Magazine” – NO mention of Verne or Wilbur

1863

  • January 31 – to be published in France, Five Weeks in a Balloon mentioned by name, in “Public Opinion” magazine (1st EVER mention of 5 Weeks, in the English Press!!!)
    An enterprising publisher is about to issue a volume with the sensation title of "Five Weeks in a Balloon; being the Narrative of the Discoveries of Three Englishmen in Africa."

  • February 4 – The Uttoxeter New Era and General Advertiser
    There is, we are informed, about to issue from the press a volume with the sensational title of "Five weeks in a Balloon; being the Narrative of the Discoveries of Three Englishmen in Africa."
  • September 26 – Ad for October “St James’s” magazine lists Five Weeks in a Balloon (synopsis) by Sir Lascelles Wraxall
  • October (Sept 28) – Five Weeks in a Balloon (synopsis), in October “St James’s” magazine – by-line Sir Lascelles Wraxall, and he credits M. Berne [sic] in article
  • Oct 11 – Ad for The St. James Magazine, acknowledges a contribution by Sir Lascelles Wraxall of Five Weeks in a Ballon, that he attributes to M. Jules Berne - The Weekly Dispatch, London England, page 6

1867

  • Feb 22 – Ad for The New York Weekly Magazine for February 23. Contents: "From the Earth to the Moon," ...... , Bedford Inquirer, Bedford Pensylvania, Page 3
  • January 26 to March 30 – From the Earth to the Moon and an editorial on it, is published in 10 installments in “New York Weekly Magazine of Popular Literature Science, and Art”, Volume IV, Nos. 56-65 (Jules Verne Encyclopedia)
  • This French only entry in a U.S. newspaper, is included here only for “completeness”.
    May 4 – A 1 column newspaper “letter” in French (“Le Great Eastern, Mardi, 6 avril, a bord du Great Eastern.”) written by Jules Verne about the Great Eastern, appears in “The Thibodeaux Sentinel”, Thibodeaux, Louisiana (A bilingual newspaper). Possibly written as publicity in return for his trip on the Great Eastern. (as per Volker Dehs)

1868

  • June 1 – Five Weeks in a Balloon, From the Earth to the Moon and Sea of Ice [sic] mentioned by name, making publishers aware of reprints of Verne’s novels in French, in “American Literary Gazette”
  • October 31 – Five Weeks in a Balloon (synopsis) appears in “The London” magazine – unknown if credit given, but M. Berne[sic] “probably” still credited in article
  • December 5 – Five Weeks in a Balloon (synopsis) appears in “Every Saturday” magazine – No by-line, M. Berne [sic] credited in article (Jules Verne Encyclopedia)
  • December 19 – Five Weeks in a Balloon (synopsis) appears in “The Yonkers Gazette” – No by-line, M. Berne [sic] credited in article

1869

  • February 4 – A report on a survey by a Parisian Mayor, about requests by subject and author at a local library, reveals that books by Jules Verne were requested 48 times, in a given period (Victor Hugo 115 in the same period), appears in “The Pall Mall Gazette”, London, page 8
  • February 20 – Five Weeks in a Balloon published by D. Appleton and Company, New York (Jules Verne Encyclopedia)
  • June 10 – From the Earth to the Moon is published in 17 installments over 2 months, in “Newark Daily and Weekly Journal of New Jersey” (Jules Verne Encyclopedia)
  • Aug 19 – Letter published saying that the article Journey to the Moon by Jules Berne, is not possible, and if it was, you could not live there! - The Courier and Angus, Dundee, Tayside, Scotland, page 3
  • The below collection of 3 articles, retain the French titles of the books, but prove that Jules Verne is NOW being noticed
    • §  April 29 – A lengthy, rambling but positive review of Voyages Extraordinaires – Aventures du Capitaine Hatteras and Cinq Semaines en Ballon being introduced to Ireland by a bookseller, “The Freeman’s Journal”, Dublin
    • §  June 19 –Short positive two paragraph article “mentions” 5 French Jules Verne novels – Cinq Semaines en Ballon (12th Ed.), Voyage au Centre de la Terre (7th Ed.), De la Terre a la Lune (5th Ed.) Le Desert de Glace (5th Ed.), Les Enfants du Capitaine Grant, in “The Examiner and London Review”, page 392
