Plot Synopsis:
(courtesy of D. Kytasaari - http://epguides.com/djk/JulesVerne/works.shtml)

Ships are disappearing all over the world and it believed to be caused by a sea monster. Dr. Pierre Aronnax, author of the book The Mysteries of the Ocean Deep, his companion Conseil and Canadian harpooner Ned Land are hired by the U.S. government to help put and end to this mystery by joining an expedition on the Abraham Lincoln. After months of searching the Abraham Lincoln finds its quarry and in the ensuing collision, Dr. Aronnax, Conseil and Ned Land are thrown overboard. In their efforts to survive, the trio find themselves on the surface of the "monster" itself, which turns out to be a submarine. Captain Nemo allows the trio to remain alive on board his submarine, the Nautilus, as his permanent guests, meaning he will never allow them to leave to reveal his secrets. The Captain uses this meeting with Dr. Aronnax, whose book he has read, to begin a new cruise through the oceans and seas of the world, so that he can show Dr. Aronnax where his book was lacking in details; meanwhile, Ned Land's primary interest in escape.

The Events in this novel take place in: 1866

Publishers Catalogue in rear

ed: Andrew Cox checked the dates of "New books" listed in the rear publishers catalogue. After checking about a dozen of them against dates listed in online institutional library collections , all those books would be dated 1872/1873

So this is a pretty early edition which must have been published very close to the date of the Sampson Low First Edition

20,000 Leagues Under the Sea
nd (1882)
John W. Lovell, Publisher
Nos. 14 and 16 Astor Place
New York

Cover title is:

20,000 Leagues Under the Sea

while the title page title reads:

Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Seas;
or,
The Marvellous and Exciting Adven
tures of Pierre Aronnax, Conseil
his Servant, and Ned Land,
A Canadian Harpooner.

The chapter heading and first 2 sentences of the book is:

"CHAPTER I.
A Shifting Reef.

The year 1866 was signalled by a remarkable incident, a mysterious and inexplicable phenomenon, which doubtless no one has yet forgetten. Not to mention rumors which agitate the maritime population, and excited the public mind, even in the interior of contintents, seafaring men were particularly excited."

This book is inscribed:
Jimmie E Farrell
From
Lizzie and Mamr(?)
Christmas 1882

You may ask why I consider this a Canadian edition.

Well, the base of the spine says Belford , Clarke & Co. which began as a Canadian publishing company.
I am not 100% sure this IS a Canadian book, but according to some sources on the web, both Lovell and Belford Clarke had a reputation for publishing pirated works, and Belford Clark was even sued for it. Maybe Belford Clarke wanted this title in Canada and used the printed insides by Lovell and put their own cover on it.
The history of Belford Clarke(external link) seems to indicate that the partnership between Alexander Belford and James Clarke began in 1875 and at some point they moved from Toronto to Chicago. The company was disbanded in 1893.

Ed: Around the World, and 20,000 Leagues were the last 2 books to be added to the Uniform Edition. Almost an after thought! It appears that this addition came in the early 1900's and I would consider these "weakest" of the sets volumes, in the sense that they only contain 12 illustrations each.

This appears to be the first edition of this omnibus which was reprinted many times

The Dustjacket flap reads:
"Every Uncle should buy at least six copies of this book, one for himself and five for all his neices and nephews. For as a writer of pure adventure, of exciting narrative and hairbreadth escape, Verne has never been surpassed. Most of his predictions in the four books contained in this volume have already been fulfilled except, of couorse the trip to the moon (and rockets are now being built to accomplish this). The best of his stories are included in this one volume. With maps, endpapers and a frontispiece for each tale in two colors by Helene Carter."

* The Dustjacket says Jules Verne Omnibus

The dustjacket is NOT Black, but a dark blue.

The Dustjacket flap reads:
"Four complete novels are included in this edition of the best-known works of Jules Verne. They have a double appeal. On the one hand, they rank with the classic adventure stories of Rudyard Kipling, G. A. Henty, and H. Rider Haggard, and on the other they are as much a part of everyone's literary background as Tom Sawyer or Treasure Island.
The famous tales of Jules Verne are among the classic examples of scientific prophecy. At the time they were first published, they seemed the wholly impossible product of a too vivid imagination. Today we are not surprised at submarines and aeroplanes and rockets and we have surpassed even his prophecies of speedy travel.
But we have not yet caught up with the prophecies of Jules Verne. Some of the activities of Captain Nemo of the good submarine Nautilus in Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea will seem beyond the reach of human ingenuity, and our efforts with rocket ships are still only experimental. In many ways, Jules Verne is still in advance of the times, and the excitement and action of these stories remain a unique portion of the literature of scientific adventuring."

Following the release of his spectacular Moby Dick: A Pop-Up Book, paper-crafting genius Sam Ita gives Jules Verne’s engrossing undersea story an equally unique and amazing presentation. Ita literally takes graphic novels into another dimension with breathtaking designs that pop, flaps that lift, parts that move, and art that astonishes. There’s nothing like it out on the market. You won’t believe your eyes as you join Captain Nemo on an unforgettable adventure: submarines, sea monsters, and even the lost city of Atlantis (complete with ancient artifacts, temples, and columns) rise from the page as if emerging from the waves. Take a 3-D look inside Jules Verne’s visionary submarine; sit with the sailors at their lobster-laden table; pull a lever to move the diving gauge; and face a giant squid as its slippery tentacles attack the Nautilus and her crew. Just as he did with his immensely popular Moby Dick, Sam Ita has concocted pure thrilling magic.
